FAQ

New-guard questions, answered straight.

Do I need a guard card to apply for a security job in California?
In most cases, yes. California requires a BSIS guard card (security registration) before you can legally work as a security guard. Many employers will hire conditional on you completing training and submitting your BSIS application — but you'll need the registration to keep the job.
How long does the whole process take?
Most students finish training in 3–7 days. After you submit your Live Scan and BSIS application, BSIS typically issues the registration within 1–3 weeks.
Can I work while waiting for BSIS to issue my card?
Many California employers accept your training certificate as interim proof you've completed BSIS-required hours, then transition you to full registration once BSIS issues. Confirm with your specific employer before starting.
What if I have a criminal record?
It depends on the offense and the time elapsed. BSIS evaluates each application individually. Disqualifying offenses are listed under California Business and Professions Code; many other records can be approved with proper disclosure. We recommend running a free background-eligibility check before paying for training.
Are the in-person hours required?
Yes. Under current California rules, the Power to Arrest and WMD modules must include in-person hours with a BSIS-approved provider. Our hybrid bundle covers both — pure online-only programs no longer satisfy California requirements.
